I just immigrated to United Kingdom from India and had to adjust with 28KG check-in baggage allowance, and 7 KG of carry-on luggage along with laptop. I travelled with Virgin Atlantic, and believe me they gave me such a hard time for 1 KG above the weight in check-in and carry-on each that I am now repenting on why I had taken a return ticket. My biggest mistake was I could not get time to research on the airlines. Even if I would have done that, no where it was possible to take more than 28 KG in luggage. At least every travel agent says or airline ads read that.

But believe me, you can get higher baggage allowance if you are immigrating to another country – at least I am aware of that it’s possible from India.

If you are immigrating from India to UK, you can call Jet Airways and talk to their support about the baggage allowance for immigrants. They would assure you 40 KG of check-in baggage allowance instead of usual 28 KG. That’s whole 12 KG extra without paying a penny. That must be valid for other countries than UK as well, you just need to call them and check it before you book your tickets with anyone else.

Wherever you live in the world, I would suggest following additional steps and try to get additional baggage allowance:

• Make sure you have list of all popular / new (but all good) air lines flying abroad.
• Try to figure out who is newly establishing in the market, and try to contact them first to negotiate on baggage (you can negotiate on many more things if possible)
• If all of them are pretty popular, try to see the local ones – who has different rules than the multinational ones.
• Phone each one of them anyways, and figure out what all they offer in additional services focusing more on luggage allowance.
• Try to reach your friends and acquaintances in the same country you are immigrating to, and take their opinion on it. Most of the times, they have idea of such offers

It’s okay to get more baggage allowance if you are immigrating but for other travel, be sure to travelite and follow these tips to pack your carry-on luggage as smartly as possible.
